About Chalk Paint™
When Annie Sloan developed her unique decorative paint, Chalk Paint™, over 20 years ago, she revolutionised the world of decorative painting. Frustrated with the lack of paint options available at the time, she created her signature paint with its remarkable versatility and ease of use for everyone from the novice to the professional to enjoy.
Annie Sloan developed her now famous decorative paint, Chalk Paint™, in 1990 to answer the need she had for a versatile paint that would have many uses from acting like limewash to looking like old painted furniture. She called it Chalk Paint™ because of its beautiful velvety, matt finish.
One of the great aspects about my paint is the number of different ways it can be used – it is not a one dimensional paint but can be used thickly, thinly, crackled, stippled, overlaid and rubbed through, smoothly, and like gesso.
Chalk Paint™ decorative paint by Annie Sloan is very easy to work with. It very rarely requires any preparation, such as sanding or priming, and can be used indoors or outside on just about any surface from wood to metal, and matt plastic to terracotta. It can revitalise old furniture, walls, ceilings, and floors with ease. It’s easy, fun, and makes amazing results accessible to everyone.
With a colour palette inspired by 18th and 20th Century décor and design, you can easily mix the colours together to extend the range. Add a little water to it to make it smooth, thicken it up by leaving the lid off, and make it into a wash by adding even more water. Use flat brushes for a smooth look or bristle brushes for a more textured aged look. Gorgeous results have never been so simple and straightforward. Chalk Paint™ is eco-friendly too. It contains extremely low volatile organic compounds (‘VOCs’) and has no odour.
How to use Chalk Paint™
There are no fixed rules for painting with Chalk Paint™ its versatility allows you to find your style and creativity. It can be used on any surface, both indoors and outside and it is very rare that you need to sand or prime before your start painting.
Annie Sloan Soft Wax is the perfect partner for combines two of the purest and hardest natural waxes available carnauba wax and beeswax and has been formulated to work with the Chalk Paint™. The Clear Soft Wax is used for protection and durability giving a beautiful finish. You can apply the Soft Wax with a brush or lint-free cloth, and as you do this you should work the wax into the paint removing any excess as you go. The paint absorbs the wax and they work together to create a protective barrier. Be careful not to apply too much wax, work on the basis that less is more and apply liberally.
The wax should feel touch dry after you have applied it but the complete curing process can take up to 21 days. If an area that you are painting is likely to get a lot of wear and tear then it is okay to apply a second coat of Soft Wax but it is advisable to do this the following day. If you are wanting to achieve a distressed finish then we recommend that you sand after applying the Soft Clear Wax. Soft Wax has the consistency of a soft margarine and has very little odour, it is food-safe and water-repellent too.
